Why is the Regenerative Surf ecosystem important?

Regeneration in surfing is important because it can help to address some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, such as climate change, pollution, and social inequality. With over 20 million surfers worldwide and an estimated global surfing market of $4 billion dollars – there are people and resources to move the needle. Some efforts are siloed, but there are organizations already working on solutions.

Climate change is a major threat to coastal communities around the world. Sea level rise, storm surges, and coastal erosion are all displacing people and destroying livelihoods. Surfers can play a role in mitigating climate change by reducing their carbon footprint and supporting efforts to regenerate the coastal environment from mangrove restoration to sea trees to kelp – solutions abound.

Pollution is another major challenge facing the world’s oceans. Plastic pollution, in particular, is a major problem. Surfers can help to reduce pollution by eliminating single use plastics from daily life, strategically working for clean beaches and waterways, and by supporting businesses that are working to improve the natural environment.

Social inequality and mental health are major challenges facing the world. Surfing is a sport that is often seen as exclusive and elitist. However, there are a number of organizations working to make surfing more accessible to people from all backgrounds and abilities. Surfers can play a role in promoting social justice by supporting these organizations and by creating a more inclusive surfing community that values .
